I joined Eccleshill Road Runners over 12 years ago to be able to pass my R.A.F fitness test, and have stayed with the club ever since – despite being posted abroad at times and stationed across the country.

I have completed in every distance over the years from 10K to marathons and cross country, and have recently taken up the post of the Club Secretary.

In January 1993 at the age of 33 I decided to stop smoking. I had tried earlier but started again after about a year. My weight had soared to fifteen and a half stone. So I made three New Year resolutions; to kick the weed, to diet and start to run.

The only running I’d done up to then was to catch a bus, and that wasn’t very often. But within six months I had my weight down to eleven stones and did my first race, the Ilkley 10k in a time of 45 minutes. I joined Eccleshill RR at the end of 1995 to help train for my first London Marathon.

Although I’ve put some weight back on I wouldn’t touch that dreaded weed again. And as for the running it’s like the curse of the Mummy, I’m not very fast but I keep plodding along.

Up to the 14th October 2001 I’ve managed to notch up 13 marathons and 62 half marathons

I started running about 3 years ago. Started off doing a few 10 and 5Ks and then the bug hit me. I decided to look round for a running club and saw Eccleshill Road Runners advertising for new members. This was the opportunity I needed, so I plucked up the courage and went to see them at their training ground.Once I got there I found everybody so helpful and friendly, this has really helped me with my running over the past year.

The help and support they have given me has got my 10K time down to 45 mins and have completed my first half marathon.
